David Wendl

I wrote this poem during my first Creative Wrting Class in high school. I then presented it at the first ever HSMSE Winter Arts Festival. I'm still not sure if anyone knew who I was.

Do You Know Who I Am?

Do you know who I am?

You think you do, don’t you
but what do you really know?

You know my name, yes,
but do you know
what lies beyond?

(what’s in a name?
hundreds of others
share mine.)

My favorite color,
my favorite food,
my favorite joke,
my favorite book,
yes, everyone knows that.

Do you know
What lies beyond
this human shell,
What I do live for,
what I believe,
My secret passions,
what I most fear,
What lies buried within
the colorless Id
Of my subconscious
where thoughts coalesce.

I know, but
do you know who I am?

You know my name, yes,
but do you know
what lies within?

(what’s in a name?
hundreds of others
share mine.)

Do you know
The images that flood my mind
when I am bored,
The places I seek to find
a reason for life,
The primeval monster of the Id
held within,
That which I will not admit
to any mortal soul.

Do you know?

Do you?

No.

I know.

But no one else
will ever know.

No one else
can ever know.
